The Western Lakes & Mountains region of Maine is an outdoor, four-season paradise. Hundreds of lakes, ponds and river offer sportsmen and adventurist alike beautiful surroundings. Skiing, hiking, boating, fishing, hunting, whitewater rafting, and snowmobiling are all popular activities here. Below is a brief list of some stops you may want to make along the way.

> Lewiston-Auburn Area:

Public Theatre:
Lewiston's professional stage company.

Olin Arts Center:
Located on the campus of Bates College, this landmark houses and excellent concert hall and an art museum.

Muskie Archives:
Also located on the campus of Bates College, this repository for the papers of noted Bates alumnus Edmund S. Muskie, former Maine governor, U.S. Senator and Secretary of State. Tours of the archives are available throughout the year, as are campus tours for prespective students and their families.

Stanton Bird Sanctuary:
This 230-acres preservse, called "Thorncrag", is one of the largest bird and small animal santuaries in New England.

> Sebago Lakes Area:

Jones Museum:
Exhibits more than 7,000 pieces of ancient to modern glass and ceramic decorative art from countries around the world.

> Fryeburg Area:

Hemlock Bridge:
One of Maine's few remaining covered bridges. The hemlock bridge spans the Saco River on U.S. Route 302 just east of Fryeburg.

> Livermore Area:

Norlands Living History Center:
A 445-acre complex recreating nineteenth century life, including maple sugaring and harvest suppers. The center is comprised of a victorian mansion with attached well and barn, a granite library, a church, and a one-room schoolhouse, along with much of the original farmland. Day programs for children help them identify with the past and develop an appreciation for present day living.

> Bethel Area:

Dr. Moses Mason House (1813):
Now a museum, it is also part of the Broad Street Historic District in Bethel. It is open to the public and contains regional archives, exhibit areas, and an auditorium for films, lectures and special programs. Headquarters for the Bethel Historical Society.

White Mountain National Forest:
Located just west of Bethel following Route 2, you'll arrive at the north end of the White Mountain National Forest (also accessible driving north from Fryeburg on Route 113). Several campgrounds, camps, and lodges are available for you to explore some of the best scenic hiking in Maine.

Oxford Plains Speedway:
This speedway hosts the "Oxford 250" NASCAR race each July.

> Rangley Lakes Area:

MEG's Doll Museum:
Dating from the 1800s to the present day, MEG dolls, include international representatives from throughout the world. Just a short walk from Rangeley's Maine Street, it is located on Pleansant Street. A small entrance fee is required. Open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.

The Wilhelm Reich Museum:
An historic site and historic museum, including Reich's inventions, paintings, bookstore, and a natural historical trail on the grounds. Located on Route 4, north of Rangeley.

Rangeley Historical Society Museum:
Collection of Rangeley antiques, memorabilia, records, photographs, and historical displays. The museum is housed in Rangeley's first commercial building built of brick and mortor in 1905. Free admission. Located on Main Street.

> Windham:

Babb's Bridge:
One of only nine remaining covered bridges in Maine.
