Baxter State Park is Maine's crown jewel of wilderness — 209,501 acres of pristine forest, lakes, and mountains surrounding the summit of Mount Katahdin, Maine's highest peak and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. The park was a gift to the people of Maine from Governor Percival Baxter and remains one of the most spectacular wilderness preserves in the eastern United States.
