Monhegan Island sits 10 miles offshore from the Maine coast — a small plateau of spruce forest and dramatic cliffs rising from the Gulf of Maine with no cars, no chain stores, and a year-round population of about 60 people. Artists have been coming to Monhegan since the late 19th century, drawn by the quality of light, the dramatic scenery, and the sense of complete removal from ordinary life. A day trip to Monhegan is one of the best things you can do on the Maine coast.
Getting to Monhegan Island
Monhegan Boat Line from Port Clyde — The most frequent and popular service, operating year-round. The crossing takes about 70 minutes. Port Clyde is about 1.5 hours from Portland. This is the recommended route for most visitors.
Hardy Boat Cruises from New Harbor — Seasonal service, about 1 hour crossing. Good alternative that avoids Port Clyde crowds on busy summer days.
Balmy Days Cruises from Boothbay Harbor — Seasonal day trips, about 1.5 hour crossing. Convenient for visitors based in the Boothbay area.
Book in advance: Ferry tickets sell out well ahead during summer weekends. The day trip schedule typically gives you 3.5-4 hours on the island.
What to Expect on Monhegan
The ferry docks at the island’s small harbor — fishing shacks, lobster traps, and weather-beaten buildings around the wharf. There are no cars on Monhegan. From the harbor, the island spreads in two directions: the village on the harbor side, and the dramatic clifftop trails on the ocean side. Pick up a trail map at the ferry dock — appropriate footwear matters on the rough terrain.
The Hiking Trails
Cathedral Woods — The most beloved trail on the island, a walk through a cathedral-like grove of ancient spruce and balsam fir where sunlight filters through the canopy and the forest floor is carpeted in moss. Otherworldly and unlike any forest on the mainland.
The Ocean Trails (Whitehead, Blackhead, Burnt Head) — Dramatic clifftop trails on the island’s ocean side with cliffs dropping 160 feet directly to the sea. Views across the open Atlantic are extraordinary. On a day with any swell, the wave action against the cliff base is dramatic.
The Loop — A full circumnavigation combining the ocean trails with return through Cathedral Woods and the village takes about 2-3 hours — ideal for a day trip covering the island’s essential character.
Monhegan Light — The lighthouse at the island’s high point is open as a small museum during summer, with views taking in the full sweep of the ocean and surrounding islands.
The Art Scene
Robert Henri, Rockwell Kent, George Bellows, Edward Hopper, and Jamie Wyeth all painted on Monhegan. Several working artists maintain studios open to visitors during summer. The Monhegan Museum of Art and History presents the island’s art and natural history. Walking around the village, you’ll encounter painters working plein air — a living art community, not a curated tourist experience.
Wildlife on Monhegan
Seabirds: The waters around the island support large concentrations of common murre, razorbill, black guillemot, Atlantic puffin, and northern gannet during summer. The clifftop trails provide excellent vantage points for scanning the water below.
Migration: Monhegan is one of the premier birdwatching destinations in Maine during spring and fall migration — the island acts as a magnet for migrating songbirds crossing the Gulf of Maine in May and September-October.
Marine mammals: Harbor seals, gray seals, and harbor porpoise are common. Minke whales occasionally appear offshore.
Where to Eat
Fish House Fish near the harbor — lobster rolls, chowder, and fresh fish on the dock. The obvious choice for day trip lunch. The Barnacle Café — coffee and baked goods in the village. Bring snacks and water from the mainland regardless — food options are limited and the hiking is more demanding than it looks.
Practical Tips
- Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots or trail runners — the ocean trails involve rough, rocky terrain with some exposure
- Layers: Bring a windproof layer — the island is 10 miles offshore and fully exposed to wind
- Time: 3.5-4 hours is enough for Cathedral Woods, the ocean trails, and lunch — but not everything
- Crowds: Head for the cliffs quickly after docking — the ocean trails disperse visitors fast
- Overnight: If you have flexibility, staying at least one night gives you Monhegan without the day-trippers
- Cell service: Limited — download offline maps before you leave the mainland
Getting to Port Clyde
From Portland, take Route 1 north to Thomaston, then Route 131 south to Port Clyde — about 1.5 hours. Parking available near the ferry dock (fee charged in summer). Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure.
