Bethel is western Maine’s most complete four-season destination — a classic New England village that serves as the base camp for Sunday River ski resort in winter and a gateway to some of the finest outdoor recreation in the region in every other season. The village itself is genuinely attractive: a walkable downtown of historic buildings, good restaurants, and independent shops centered on the Bethel Common, with the White Mountains visible to the southwest and the Sunday River valley opening to the north.
Ski Sunday River
Sunday River is Maine’s largest and most technically sophisticated ski resort — 135 trails across eight interconnected peaks with 2,340 feet of vertical drop and a snowmaking system that covers virtually the entire mountain. The eight peaks offer genuinely different skiing experiences, from groomed cruisers on White Cap to steeper terrain in Jordan Bowl and Aurora Peak. Bethel village is about 6 miles from the Sunday River base area. See our Maine skiing guide for more on Sunday River and other Maine ski areas.
Hike the Mahoosuc Range
The Mahoosuc Range on the Maine-New Hampshire border west of Bethel is one of the most challenging hiking destinations in the Northeast. The Appalachian Trail traverses the full range, including Mahoosuc Notch — widely considered the most difficult mile on the entire AT, a boulder-choked gorge requiring hands-and-feet scrambling through massive fallen granite.
Old Speck Mountain (4,170 feet) — Maine’s third highest peak, 7.6 miles round trip with 2,700 feet of elevation gain. Mahoosuc Notch — A challenging but unforgettable day hike through a narrow gorge where ice persists well into summer. Goose Eye Mountain — Open ledge terrain near the summit with 360-degree views across the Mahoosuc Range and White Mountains. See our Maine hiking guide for more trails.
Visit Grafton Notch State Park
Grafton Notch State Park, about 20 miles north of Bethel on Route 26, is one of the finest state parks in Maine.
Screw Auger Falls — One of the most photographed natural features in western Maine, accessible via a short walk. The falls drop through carved granite gorges in a series of dramatic cascades.
Table Rock — A moderate 2.4-mile round trip hike to an exposed ledge with sweeping views of the Grafton Notch valley. Baldpate Mountain (3,812 feet) — A more demanding hike with excellent summit views. Moose Cave — A short trail to a narrow gorge and cave formation suitable for all ages.
Paddle the Androscoggin River
The Androscoggin River flows through the Bethel area offering accessible flatwater paddling for families and beginners. The stretch through the Bethel area passes through classic western Maine river valley scenery — farmland, forested hills, and mountain views. Canoe and kayak rentals are available in the Bethel area.
Cross-Country Ski and Snowshoe
Carter’s Cross Country Ski Center maintains one of the finest groomed Nordic trail networks in Maine — 35+ kilometers of trails through open fields, forest, and river valley terrain. For snowshoeing, Grafton Notch State Park and the Sunday River area logging roads provide unlimited winter trail access.
Explore Downtown Bethel
Bethel’s downtown is centered on the Bethel Common — a traditional New England village green surrounded by Federal and Colonial-style buildings dating to the 18th and 19th centuries. The Bethel Historical Society Museum occupies several of these historic buildings. The downtown has solid independent restaurants, cafes, and shops within easy walking distance.
Watch for Wildlife
Moose are regularly seen along Route 26 between Bethel and Grafton Notch, particularly in the boggy sections north of the village. Black bears are present throughout the surrounding forest. Bald eagles fish the Androscoggin River. See our Maine moose watching guide for tips.
Where to Stay
The Bethel Inn Resort is the historic centerpiece — a full-service resort on the Bethel Common with its own golf course and Nordic ski trails. Several inns and B&Bs in the village offer a more intimate alternative. Browse our Bethel lodging guide for the full list.
Getting to Bethel
Bethel is approximately 1.5 hours from Portland via Routes 302 and 2, and about 3 hours from Boston. The approach from the south on Route 2 through the Androscoggin valley is scenic in every season.
