Carrabassett Valley, Maine — Sugarloaf, Skiing & Mountain Recreation

Carrabassett Valley is a small western Maine town that exists almost entirely to serve Sugarloaf Mountain — Maine’s largest ski resort and one of the premier ski destinations in the eastern United States. Set in a dramatic mountain valley on the upper Carrabassett River, the town is surrounded by some of the finest mountain scenery in Maine. In winter it’s a world-class ski destination; in summer a gateway to exceptional hiking, mountain biking, and outdoor recreation in the western mountains.

Sugarloaf Mountain Resort

Sugarloaf dominates Carrabassett Valley — literally and figuratively. The mountain rises to 4,237 feet with 1,282 feet of vertical drop and 162 trails across 1,282 skiable acres. What sets Sugarloaf apart from every other eastern resort is its above-treeline terrain: the Snowfields at the summit offer open, wind-swept alpine skiing with no trees — a rarity east of the Rockies. The resort’s base village offers ski-in, ski-out lodging, restaurants, shops, and a lively après-ski scene. See our complete Maine Skiing Guide for trail maps and planning details.
