Maine has two world-class ski resorts — Sunday River in Bethel and Sugarloaf in the Carrabassett Valley — and choosing between them is one of the most common questions Maine winter travelers face. Both are legitimate destination resorts with serious terrain, substantial snowmaking, and full resort infrastructure. But they offer distinctly different experiences, and the right choice depends entirely on what you’re looking for.

The Basics

Sunday River is located in Bethel in western Maine, about 1.5 hours from Portland and 3 hours from Boston. The resort spans eight interconnected peaks with 135 trails and 2,340 feet of vertical drop. It’s Maine’s most visited ski resort and one of the top-grossing ski areas in New England.

Sugarloaf is located in the Carrabassett Valley, about 3 hours from Portland and 4.5 hours from Boston. The resort has 161 trails across a single massive mountain with 2,820 feet of vertical drop — the second highest skiable vertical in the eastern United States. Sugarloaf is more remote and has a stronger sense of destination resort identity.

Mountain Terrain

Sunday River excels at variety and accessibility. Eight interconnected peaks offer genuinely different skiing experiences — groomed cruisers on White Cap, steeper terrain in Jordan Bowl and Aurora Peak. The grooming quality is consistently excellent and the snowmaking system is one of the most sophisticated in New England.

Sugarloaf wins on raw terrain quality. The Snowfields — a vast expanse of open alpine terrain above the treeline — are unique in the eastern United States. Sugarloaf’s expert terrain is more challenging and more abundant than Sunday River’s.

Verdict: Sugarloaf for expert skiers and alpine terrain. Sunday River for the best overall variety and grooming consistency.

Snow and Conditions

Sunday River has a slight edge in snowmaking coverage and consistency — it’s rare for Sunday River to have inadequate coverage anywhere on the mountain. Sugarloaf gets more natural snow — the Carrabassett Valley sits higher and further north. In a strong snow year, Sugarloaf’s conditions are exceptional. In a weak snow year, the higher elevation and open alpine terrain can create wind and icing issues.

Verdict: Sunday River for reliability. Sugarloaf for quality in a good snow year.

Access and Location

Sunday River is significantly easier to reach — 1.5 hours from Portland, 3 hours from Boston. Sugarloaf requires 3 hours from Portland, 4.5 from Boston, with a remote final approach up Route 27. The remoteness is part of Sugarloaf’s character, but it means a Sugarloaf trip is always a multi-day affair.

Verdict: Sunday River decisively.

The Village Experience

Sunday River’s slope-side base village is functional rather than charming — Bethel village 6 miles away provides a more authentic alternative. Sugarloaf has a more developed and cohesive base village with slope-side condos, restaurants, and a health club that gives it more destination resort character.

Verdict: Sugarloaf for atmosphere. Sunday River for convenience of nearby Bethel.

Families

Sunday River is the better family resort. The interconnected peaks make it easy to keep families together regardless of ability level. The ski school is extensive and well-organized. Sugarloaf is excellent for families where everyone skis at a reasonable level.

Verdict: Sunday River.

Who Should Go Where

Choose Sunday River if: You’re coming from southern Maine, NH, or Massachusetts; skiing with beginners or mixed ability groups; want reliable grooming; combining with a Bethel village stay; or it’s a day trip or weekend.

Choose Sugarloaf if: You’re an expert skier who wants the Snowfields and above-treeline terrain; want the full destination resort immersion; visiting after significant natural snowfall; or you’ve already skied Sunday River and want something different.

Can You Ski Both?

Absolutely — they’re about 1.5 hours apart by car. A Maine ski week that splits time between Sunday River and Sugarloaf is one of the better ski vacations available in the eastern United States.
