Kennebunkport

Kennebunkport and Ogunquit are the two most visited towns on the southern Maine coast, and they’re often compared by visitors trying to decide where to base a Maine beach vacation. Both are within easy reach of Boston, both have excellent beaches and restaurants, and both are genuinely attractive New England coastal towns. But they offer quite different experiences — and the right choice depends significantly on what you’re looking for.

The Basics

Ogunquit is a small town built around three exceptional assets: Ogunquit Beach (one of the finest in New England), the Marginal Way (a spectacular cliff-top coastal walk), and a strong arts and dining scene rooted in a century-old artist colony tradition. About 70 miles north of Boston.

Kennebunkport is centered on Dock Square — a compact village of galleries, boutiques, and restaurants near the Kennebunk River. Best known as the location of the Bush family compound at Walker’s Point and has a reputation as one of the most refined coastal towns in Maine. About 85 miles north of Boston.

The Beach

Ogunquit Beach — a 3.5-mile stretch of fine white sand, consistently ranked among the best beaches in New England, with the unique combination of ocean surf on one side and calm river swimming on the other. Kennebunkport’s beaches (primarily Goose Rocks Beach) are excellent but more typical of the Maine coast — rockier, with more seaweed and tidal variation.

Verdict: Ogunquit decisively for beach quality.

The Village

Ogunquit’s village is walkable but primarily oriented toward summer tourism. Kennebunkport’s Dock Square is more genuinely village-like — historic architecture, civic life, and a stronger sense of place. The Bush family connection has brought a certain cachet and a higher concentration of upscale retail.

Verdict: Kennebunkport.

The Marginal Way

Ogunquit has an asset Kennebunkport cannot match — the Marginal Way. This mile-long cliff-top footpath connecting Ogunquit village to Perkins Cove is one of the finest short coastal walks in the United States, offering continuous Atlantic views from dramatic rocky headlands. Free and genuinely spectacular in any weather. Kennebunkport has no equivalent.

Verdict: Ogunquit decisively.

Dining

Ogunquit: 98 Provence, Arrows, and Cliff House Maine restaurants have regional recognition. Strong accessible scene. Kennebunkport: The White Barn Inn restaurant is one of Maine’s most celebrated fine dining destinations. Earth at Hidden Pond is similarly acclaimed.

Verdict: Tie. Kennebunkport edges ahead for fine dining. Ogunquit for overall accessibility.

Arts and Culture

Ogunquit’s art colony heritage — founded by Charles Woodbury in 1898 — produced the Ogunquit Museum of American Art (one of the finest small art museums in New England) and the Ogunquit Playhouse (Broadway-caliber summer theater since 1933). Kennebunkport has galleries but nothing that matches Ogunquit’s depth.

Verdict: Ogunquit.

Who Should Go Where

Choose Ogunquit if: A world-class beach is your top priority; you want the Marginal Way and Perkins Cove; arts and theater matter; you want more dining variety at accessible price points.

Choose Kennebunkport if: You want genuine village character and upscale atmosphere; fine dining at the White Barn Inn level is a priority; luxury inn lodging matters; you prefer a slightly less crowded summer experience.

Can You Do Both?

Easily — Ogunquit and Kennebunkport are only about 15 miles apart on Route 1. Many visitors base themselves in one town and day-trip to the other. A southern Maine coastal trip combining both gives you the best beach (Ogunquit) and the best village character (Kennebunkport) in a single itinerary.
