The Island Explorer is one of the most underutilized assets in all of Maine tourism. We’ve been recommending car-free Bar Harbor visits for years — the bus is free, frequent, and genuinely comprehensive. Visitors who use it consistently have better experiences than those fighting for parking on a July weekend.
Bar Harbor is one of the few destinations in Maine that is genuinely accessible without a car — and in many ways, visiting without one is a better experience than driving. The combination of bus service from Boston and Portland, the free Island Explorer shuttle within Acadia National Park, and the walkable nature of Bar Harbor village means that a car-free visit to Acadia is not just possible but practical.
By Bus from Boston
Concord Coach Lines operates year-round bus service from Boston’s South Station directly to Bar Harbor, with stops in Portland, Brunswick, Bath, Rockland, Camden, and Searsport. The journey takes approximately 5-6 hours. Buses drop passengers at the Village Green in the center of Bar Harbor — no taxi or transfer required. Book in advance at concordcoachlines.com — the Bar Harbor route fills up on summer weekends.
By Bus from Portland
Concord Coach Lines also serves Portland to Bar Harbor in approximately 3-3.5 hours. Portland is accessible by Amtrak’s Downeaster train from Boston’s North Station — making a train-to-bus connection possible for visitors who prefer rail or want to spend time in Portland en route.
By Ferry from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia
Bay Ferries operates seasonal high-speed ferry service between Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and Bar Harbor — approximately 3.5 hours crossing. Runs typically late May through October. Check current schedule and pricing at ferries.ca.
Getting Around Bar Harbor Village Without a Car
Bar Harbor village is exceptionally walkable — the Village Green, Cottage Street, Main Street, the waterfront, and surrounding streets are all within a 10-15 minute walk of each other. Multiple bike rental shops on Cottage Street rent bikes by the hour or day — a bike extends your range significantly and provides direct access to the Acadia carriage road network.
The Island Explorer — Free Shuttle Within Acadia
The Island Explorer is the single most important resource for car-free visitors — a free bus system connecting Bar Harbor to major Acadia destinations from late June through Columbus Day. Key routes: Route 3 to Sand Beach and Thunder Hole, Route 5 to Jordan Pond House, Route 4 to Eagle Lake and carriage road network, Route 8 to Cadillac Mountain summit. Most routes run every 30-60 minutes from approximately 7am to 10pm. Download the route map at exploreacadia.com before you arrive.
Cadillac Mountain tip: The timed entry reservation system applies to vehicles, not Island Explorer passengers. Car-free visitors can reach the summit on the bus without dealing with the vehicle reservation system.
What You Can’t Easily Do Without a Car
The core Acadia experience — Bar Harbor village, Sand Beach, Jordan Pond, the carriage roads, and Cadillac Mountain — is well-served by the Island Explorer. More difficult without a car: the Schoodic Peninsula (accessible by seasonal ferry from Bar Harbor), the quiet western side of MDI (Island Explorer served but slower), Isle au Haut (requires ferry from Stonington), and day trips to mainland communities beyond MDI.
Car-Free 3-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive by Concord Coach, walk the Shore Path and Village Green, explore downtown, dinner at Havana or Café This Way. Day 2: Island Explorer to Sand Beach and Ocean Path, Jordan Pond House for lunch and popovers, carriage road bike ride. Day 3: Island Explorer Route 8 to Cadillac Mountain for morning views, Abbe Museum, afternoon sea kayak tour from the town pier, depart by Concord Coach.
Practical Tips
- Book accommodation near the Village Green — the Island Explorer stops, Concord Coach drop-off, and walkable downtown are all centered there
- Rent a bike — significantly expands what’s accessible; the Island Explorer carries bikes on most routes
- Check last bus times — the last Island Explorer departures run earlier than you might expect
- Book the Schoodic ferry — the Bar Harbor Ferry to Schoodic Peninsula runs seasonally and is a good car-free addition
