Planning a Maine Coast Trip: How Long, When, and Where
How many days do you need? Under three days, pick one region — greater Portland and the southern beaches, or the Midcoast — and skip the rest rather than driving past it. Five days gets you from Kittery to Bar Harbor, but you will be sampling rather than seeing. A full week lets you add two or three of the peninsulas (Harpswell, Boothbay, the Blue Hill/Deer Isle peninsula), which is where the coast is at its most beautiful and least crowded.
When should you go? Early-to-mid September is the sweet spot: the water is at its warmest, towns are still fully open, summer crowds have thinned, and the light gets noticeably better. July and August are peak season — everything open, but the most crowded and expensive, with Route 1 slowing to a crawl. June is quiet and green but the ocean is cold and coastal fog is common. From November through April, a large share of coastal businesses simply close.
Which region should you choose? For a first trip, base in the Midcoast (Camden, Rockland, and the peninsulas) — it has the best concentration of classic harbor towns within short drives of each other. For beaches and easy access from Boston, choose the southern coast (Ogunquit, the Kennebunks, York). For dramatic scenery and hiking, base in Bar Harbor for Acadia. For quiet and authenticity, head Downeast to Stonington, Blue Hill, or Lubec.
Approximate drive times along the coast: Portland to Camden is about 1 hour 45 minutes; Camden to Bar Harbor about 2 hours; Portland to Bar Harbor about 3 hours direct (longer on scenic Route 1).
