Maine is one of the premier outdoor recreation destinations in the eastern United States. With 3,500 miles of coastline, 6,000 lakes and ponds, 32,000 miles of rivers and streams, and millions of acres of forest and mountains, Maine offers world-class opportunities for hiking, paddling, fishing, skiing, hunting, and nearly every other outdoor pursuit imaginable.
Hiking
Maine’s hiking ranges from easy coastal walks to challenging wilderness ascents. Acadia National Park offers 158 miles of trails including the famous Precipice Trail up Champlain Mountain. Baxter State Park protects Katahdin, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail and Maine’s highest peak at 5,268 feet. The Mahoosuc Range near Bethel contains some of the most rugged AT terrain anywhere on the 2,190-mile trail.
Paddling
Maine is a paddler’s paradise. The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is a 92-mile canoe route through remote northern Maine wilderness — one of the great canoe trips in North America. The Moose River Bow Trip near Jackman is another classic multi-day route. Sea kayaking along the island-studded coast offers endless exploration from Casco Bay to the Bold Coast of Washington County.
Fishing
Maine’s waters hold exceptional populations of brook trout, landlocked salmon, lake trout, striped bass, and bluefin tuna. The remote ponds of the north woods are legendary among fly fishermen, while the coast offers world-class saltwater fishing. Licensed guides are available throughout the state for both fresh and saltwater trips.
