We looked at how people actually search for Maine — which towns they are curious about, what they want to do, and what they ask before they visit. Based on aggregated Google Search data for MaineGuide.com across a representative sample of roughly a thousand top search queries in 2026, the results hold a few surprises. The most-searched town isn’t the one you’d guess.
Ask most people to name Maine’s marquee towns and they’ll say Portland, Bar Harbor, maybe Camden. But in the search data, the quiet Midcoast town of Belfast draws the most curiosity of any Maine town we measured — ahead of Freeport, ahead of Bar Harbor, and well ahead of Portland itself.
It’s a reminder that the Maine people search for isn’t always the Maine on the postcards.

This report is based on aggregated Google Search data for MaineGuide.com, an independent Maine travel and living guide online since 1995. The figures reflect search interest — how often Maine towns, activities, and questions appeared in searches that surfaced our site — across a representative sample of roughly a thousand top search queries in 2026. Search interest is a measure of curiosity, not visitation: it shows what people are looking up, which often runs ahead of, or differently from, where they actually go. Figures are relative measures of share within our data, not counts of visitors or residents.
A note on seasonality: Search interest in Maine shifts significantly with the seasons. Interest in beaches peaks in summer, fall foliage surges in September and October, and skiing and snowmobiling climb in winter — so the activity mix in particular would look different depending on when the data is captured. This report reflects a snapshot in 2026, and the rankings, especially for seasonal activities, should be read as a point-in-time picture rather than a fixed year-round order. The broad patterns (such as strong, steady interest in towns like Belfast and Freeport and in fishing generally) are more stable than the seasonal categories.
