Baxter State Park and Mount Katahdin
Baxter State Park is Maine’s largest state park, with more than 40 peaks and ridges, including Katahdin, and about 215 miles of trails. The park is managed with wilderness first and recreation second, so rules are strict, services are minimal and you must pack out everything you bring. Day-use limits and parking reservations apply on Katahdin in the busy season, so read our guide to the Katahdin Trailhead Pass before you plan a climb. Comparing parks? Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument
Set aside in 2016 and run by the National Park Service, the monument offers hiking, mountain biking, paddling and fishing, with hunting and snowmobiling on its east side. Services are limited, and the Park Service describes it as a park in progress. The 45-mile Katahdin Loop Road in the south section has overlooks, short hikes and wildlife viewing. The South Entrance and Loop Road are typically open to vehicles from late May to late October, and roads are generally closed to wheeled vehicles from mid-November to late May. Check the Park Service’s current conditions page before you go. See our Katahdin Woods and Waters guide for more.
The Appalachian Trail
Katahdin is the northern end of the Appalachian Trail, and Millinocket is the closest town to the park. It has lodging and shuttles that serve hikers finishing the trail. The trail crosses the Golden Road at Abol Bridge, and the section from Monson to Baxter is the 100 Mile Wilderness. Plan carefully if you are hiking any part of the trail, because services are far apart.
Rafting on the Penobscot River
Whitewater rafting on the Penobscot River is the signature summer adventure near Millinocket. Outfitters include Ktaadn Resorts, Northern Outdoors’ Katahdin Adventure Base Camp and North Country Rivers. Trips run in the warmer months, so book ahead and check each outfitter’s season.
Moose Watching
The drive up Route 11 toward Patten passes through classic moose country, and Sandy Stream Pond in Baxter is one of the most reliable viewing spots in the state. See our moose watching guide for timing and safety rules.
Winter in Millinocket
Local clubs groom trails in and around town, and the area connects to hundreds of miles of regional snowmobile trails. The Northern Timber Cruisers Snowmobile Club also grooms ski and snowshoe trails, and the JoMary Riders club has information on more trails. Each December the town hosts the Millinocket Marathon and half-marathon. See Maine in winter for the season.
